I was 14 the first time I heard a song by Francis Cabrel. My brother was playing C’était l’hiver on the guitar, and I was deeply moved by the beauty of the melody and the simplicity and perfection of the lyrics and their metaphors. It became the first of a long list of songs I would learn by heart — Cabrel had just nailed his notes into my wooden clogs.

Since then, his work has stayed with me, quietly, like a confidant, even though I haven’t often sung his songs.

Today, I’m giving myself the gift of softness, tenderness, and the quiet rebellion of a poet who never raises his voice to denounce the injustices of everyday life — Is this world serious?

From the very first chords, he casts a spell on us, and we find ourselves singing without even thinking, as if these melodies had always existed — It’s written!

The musicians accompanying me (Anthony Gagnon Boisvert and Philip Powers) share this belief that there is no need to overdo it when everything is already there. What we do will be done with generosity and sincerity. Piano, guitar, double bass, harmonies — your voices blending with mine — the stage will become a bubble where the repertoire of Francis Cabrel will resonate again and again.
