This tribute will be presented exclusively at the Trois-Rivières Cogeco Amphitheatre from July 19 to August 19, 2023.
Trois-Rivières, November 16, 2022 - The Corporation des Évènements de Trois-Rivières and Cirque du Soleil are pleased and excited to unveil today the theme of the seventh show in the Cirque du Soleil Tribute Series that will be presented during the upcoming summer season. The new Cirque du Soleil production will celebrate the ice prodigy, exceptional player and legendary number 10, the legendary Guy Lafleur.
"We are very proud to be associated with the Cogeco Amphitheatre for a seventh year. Over the years, the public of Trois-Rivières and its visitors have become faithful to our proposal to marry the circus arts and Quebec's cultural heritage. Once again, we will have the chance to deepen and explore the creative platform of the Tribute Series, but from a new angle. Guy Lafleur, who has become the idol of a people, is part of our history and we are honoured to be able to pay tribute to him through this new creation," said Stéphane Lefebvre, President and CEO of Cirque du Soleil Group.
"For six years now, the Cirque du Soleil Tribute Series has been the foundation of the summer programming at the Cogeco Amphitheatre. It's a tradition that is well established in the hearts of Quebecers. We are delighted to be able to offer a new wind to the Tribute Series this year with a theme that is outside of our usual niches," says Roger Picard, president of the Corporation des Évènements de Trois-Rivières.
Indeed, after six beautiful editions that have saluted great names of Quebec music and nearly 334,000 spectators, the creative platform of the Tribute Series is enriched with the choice of Guy Lafleur. "It's a natural evolution," adds Marie-Josée Adam, Vice President and General Manager of Cirque du Soleil's Events & Experiences division. "Above all, we celebrate Quebec figures who, through their musical work, their sporting genius or their larger-than-life personality, have marked and continue to mark the hearts of Quebecers. A source of inspiration for many, it is the man, his immense talent and his legacy that will be celebrated in the Cogeco Amphitheatre next summer.
Nicknamed the Blond Demon or Flower by his teammates and many fans during his career, Guy Lafleur thrilled several generations in Quebec with his dazzling play, his great generosity and his innate sense of sports entertainment. He made the Colisée in Quebec City and the Forum in Montreal resound with scenes of collective jubilation, where the crowd chanted "Guy, Guy, Guy" in a single glorious burst. With over 1,125 games played and no less than 560 career goals, Guy Lafleur rose to the top with determination, perseverance and humility.
"My father was an artist on the ice. He knew how to use his imagination to be the best in his sport. He also used to say that field hockey is not a one-man show, but rather a team effort," adds Martin Lafleur, son of Guy Lafleur. "This creativity and sense of teamwork are very strong and very present in Cirque du Soleil shows. I am proud to know that my father will be honored in Trois-Rivières next summer.
